About this picture
La Balançoire politique... is a public-domain illustration by Honoré Daumier, dated 1866. Lithograph on newsprint. The file comes from National Gallery of Art.
“La Balançoire politique...” (1866) is the kind of sheet Daumier made by the thousand: a blunt, observing drawing of ordinary people, the law, or the Paris street. Most are lithographs. A few are paintings.
About the artist
Honoré Daumier (1808–1879) was a French printmaker and painter. He made thousands of lithographs for the paper Le Charivari, satirizing lawyers, politicians, and the Paris street, and painted quieter pictures of travelers and people at work.
