About this picture
The Japanese Footbridge is a public-domain painting by Claude Monet, dated 1899. Oil on canvas. The file comes from National Gallery of Art.
This is the green Japanese bridge over the water-lily pond Monet built at Giverny. The 1899 canvases still show the banks and the arch. Later lily pictures drop the bridge and keep only the water.
About the artist
Claude Monet (1840–1926) was a founder of Impressionism. He painted the same motif again and again — haystacks, the Rouen cathedral, the Thames, then the water lilies at Giverny — to catch how light changes.
