About this picture
The Luncheon on the Grass is a public-domain drawing by Claude Monet, dated c. 1865. Black chalk on blue laid paper. The file comes from National Gallery of Art.
This is a chalk study of about 1865 for Monet’s own picnic picture. It is not Manet’s Luncheon on the Grass of 1863.
About the artist
Claude Monet (1840–1926) was a founder of Impressionism. He painted the same motif again and again — haystacks, the Rouen cathedral, the Thames, then the water lilies at Giverny — to catch how light changes.
